RBG should have stepped down. And this we must honor her dying wish nonsense? I'm sorry, when did the US become the Make A Wish Foundation? And when did an 87-year-old woman become a young child whose life would be tragically cut short?

Ruth did not own a seat on the court. She cannot 'will it' to anyone. If she wanted a say, the answer was to resign, not hold on when she clearly was incapacitated. She lived a long life -- longer than women who live in poverty, as we noted in "Ruth Badger Ginsburg (Ava and C.I.)" -- she made decisions that we are now stuck dealing with. She was no saint and this problem we now address is one of her own making.

As some began to accept reality, people got nervous about how the Dems in the Senate would handle a nominee from US President Doanld Trump. John Bresnahan and Marianne Levine (POLITICO) report on the panic over the realization that Ranking Member on the Judiciary Committee Dianne Feinstein might not be up to the job. She is 87 years old, for example, the same age that RBG died at. From the report:

Some Democrats privately fear that Feinstein could mishandle the situation and hurt their chances of winning back the majority.

Feinstein sometimes gets confused by reporters’ questions, or will offer different answers to the same question depending on where or when she’s asked. Her appearance is frail. And Feinstein's genteel demeanor, which seems like it belongs to a bygone Senate era, can lead to trouble with an increasingly hard-line Democratic base uninterested in collegiality or bipartisan platitudes.

A Democratic senator, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a group of Feinstein’s colleagues want Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) or Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) to serve as the top Democrat on the Judiciary panel for the upcoming nomination hearings, which are expected to be extraordinarily contentious. This senator is worried that potential missteps by Feinstein could cost Democrats seats.

Sorry, people, she's the Ranking Member. It's the role she was given and I don't see her saying, "Here, take the baton." I really don't see her saying that. Back to the article:

Other Democrats privately said there have been complaints to party leaders that Feinstein is not capable of handling the Judiciary post in the current situation. Some of these senators said Feinstein should have retired rather than run for reelection in 2018 at age 85. Feinstein’s age was an issue in that campaign and was raised repeatedly in news reports, but she defeated Democrat Kevin de Leon by almost 10 points.

Wait, you mean we wouldn't be in this situation right now if Dianne hadn't run for re-election or if a bunch of reactionary (and some xenophobic) jerks (most not even in California -- meaning they couldn't vote in the race) hadn't attacked Kevin Leon? We supported Kevin here. We pointed out Dianne had already lost her grip on reality and that either she would be 91 at the end of her term or leave office early -- possibly due to death.

I didn't want Dianne in the Senate to begin with. So don't come crying to me over the mess you made on the carpet. This was all seeable if you only opened your damn eyes. Rebecca noted in her January 12, 2006 piece on the Alito hearing (which NYT linked to and remains one of her most popular posts) "alito hearings: like really bad sex:"

diane feinstein, to name 1 of the worst offenders, could shoot scattershot (although she acted as though she were tossing out lillies throughout the hearings) in the other days but on the final day, she didn't need to be bringing up new issues. this is where you make the case to the people.

and for some 1 who interrupted ted kennedy repeatedly the day prior as he asked about caps, wasn't it strange that she didn't have a question on that? when kennedy was speaking yesterday, she couldn't stop interrupting. today? she's moved on.

miss diane gets my vote for most useless and i'm not fan of kohl. but miss diane was supposed to be fighting for women and instead we got a timid school marm trying to get the rowdy class to like her.

it's not just her. that's a point c.i. made tonight in the roundtable. c.i. pointed out that arlen specter couldn't stop treating her like she was a 'special' and not a real senator. he referred to her 'dramatic entrance.' there was another specific example c.i. brought up but i'm forgetting it now. but the point is, she is treated that way by others on the committee.

as an adult, she should ask them to cut it out. instead she seems tickled by the patronizing attitude.

i'm looking for the non-action figure miss diane. she comes non-fully poseable. she's in a seated postion. you can extend her legs or bend them depending upon whether you want her to sit in a chair or to sit on the floor. she wears a lovely dress with several layers. she comes with white gloves and the cutest little purse that matches her hat, her belt and her shoes. the non-action figure has a silly grin pasted on its face and is called 'miss diane, girl senator.'

Miss Dianne, Girl Senator. And Ted was furious about Dianne interrupting in the middle of his questioning, his time that he was using to build to a point that feckless Dianne destroyed. That was 2006 and Ted wasn't hiding how he felt, I was in a room with seven other people after that day's hearing where Ted unloaded on how incompetent Dianne was in that hearing.

So you cheered on a woman who, when functioning, was an imbecile and now she's way too old and way too incompetent and we need strength so suddenly you're concerned?

REACHED FOR COMMENT BY THESE REPORTERS, DIFI SAYS SHE HAS MORE THAN LETTER WRITING UP HER SKIRT AND IF THE LETTERS PROVIDE NO SOLUTIONS, SHE IS PREPARED TO TAKE THINGS UP A NOTCH.

"Bring Them Home." A column by Michael Brendan Dougherty. It runs at THE NATION? Nope. At the conservative NATIONAL REVIEW. Over at THE NATION, they continue to flounder and wallow in a cesspool. We've got British Jew Sasha Abramsky explaining the US to Americans because, gosh, isn't that what everyone needs? Elie Mystal frets over 'poor' E. Jean Carroll. She was the topic of Isaiah's THE WORLD TODAY JUST NUTS "Crazy Lady" that went up last night. You may remember Carroll, she was elevated to hero status for claiming that Donald Trump raped her -- in some year, she's not sure of which year it was, but it was a department store, she knows that. As the latest in a long of questionable characters was embraced by the faux resistance, they realized that they had another character issue on their hands like with Michael Avenatti. Of course, it took Carroll going on CNN live with Anderson Cooper for them to realize there was a problem with Carroll. While an open mouthed Anderson stared in shock, Carroll went on to 'educate' the American public that rape was (her exact word) "sexy."

Anderson quickly cut to commercial It was too late to save Carroll.

Rape is not "sexy" and once someone makes a statement like that on live TV, I don't really think they can be defamed at that point. She's a lunatic and she was always seen that way in the industry. She never had her head on straight and she had no real support from her peers. She floundered from one job to another, burning bridges repeatedly.

Can someone like that be raped? Absolutely. Anyone can be raped.

But there are survivors out there who can use our help and someone who claims she was raped and also wants the world to know that she finds rape "sexy"? That's someone who needs to fight her own battles. She clearly has issues that go beyond whatever did or did not happen to her in a department store and she's not allowed to insult the survivors of rape and also expect us to all rally around her at the same time. She's on her own as far as most of us are concerned.

But that desperate, in-bred group which calls itself the 'resistance' won't let her case die because they've got no real issues to address. Either they lack the mental abilities to do so or they just don't see the world around them.

Which goes a long way towards explaining why the week that it's announced 2,200 US troops will be leaving Iraq (only 3,000 remaining -- CORRECTION, this sentence has been fixed to note 3,000 remaining -- at least 3,000), THE NATION has nothing to offer on its front page about that.

Grasp that they have three articles about Vietnam. Babyboomers are aging and apparently the WWII trough has been gone to one time too many so THE NATION is ready to pivot to . . . Vietnam.

There was a time when THE NATION announced -- in an editorial that ran on the cover of the magazine -- that they could not support anyone who voted for the Iraq War. That was so long ago that many have forgotten and most never knew about it. The tiny number of people who continue to read THE NATION may have no idea that US troops are in Iraq. The rag certainly doesn't encourage them to acknowledge it.

War and peace? Not a concern for THE NATION. In fact, it stopped being a concern the minute Democrats were no longer the minority party in the House and the Senate. It's a rag of misfits who can't be employed anywhere else. That's why SALON and MSNBC reject Joan Walsh writes (badly) there currently.

It was a success in terms of circulation and web views when they pretended to be interested in the Iraq War. Even then, it made itself a joke. Naomi Klein had a column there. It also ran at THE GUARDIAN. She did a two-part column on people profiting from the war and THE NATION gladly ran the one on Republican James Baker and gladly refused to run the one on Democrat Madeline Albright. Things like that started to get attention. Or rolypoly Katha Pollit who presents as a feminist but refused to write about one of the biggest US crimes in Iraq -- when a group of soliders plotted to leave base, break into the home of an Iraqi family, gang-rape the 15-year-old Abeer and kill her, her parents and her younger sister. They then attempted to make it look as though 'rebels' had committed the crimes. That is a horror all on its own. And maybe if the ring-leader Steven D. Green hadn't been given the choice of going behind bars or going to Iraq, it wouldn't have happened. An attack on US troops took place in response to this. There were so many ways to cover it.

So THE NATION elected to ignore it. And fat girl Katha chose to ignore it. After months of being publicly rebuked, Katha put down the fork and spoon and wrote about Abeer -- she wrote a single sentence. Thanks for the 'sisterhood,' Katha.

We covered it here. We covered it the minute the news emerged. We covered it the minute Green was arrested on US soil. We covered the article 32 hearing for those who were still in Iraq. We covered the civilian trial in the US for Green. There were many, many times anyone could have picked up the ball and run with the story.

Katha didn't. And Elie Mystal, so nervous today over 'poor' E. Jean Carroll, never gave two s**ts about an Iraqi girl who was gang-raped by US troops while she heard her sister and parents killed, an Iraq child who had to know that the gang-rape would also end with her own murder.

But, hey, privileged Carroll thinks that in some year -- she's not sure which -- she was raped by Donald and, golly, gee, rape is "sexy."

Die on that mountain, Elie -- but die quickly because we don't need you.

Last summer, a platoon was sent home early from Iraq. James Laporta and Julie Watson (AP) report this early move was the result of a Navy Seal raping a sailor:

The story of the platoon being pulled from Iraq has been previously reported, but documents obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act and interviews with nearly a dozen people give the first in-depth view into what led to the rare recall. The documents and interviews show that women deployed with the SEALs say they were ogled and sexually harassed during the deployment. Records obtained by the AP from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service also reveal a previously unknown reported allegation of sexual misconduct against the SEAL platoon chief, Special Warfare Operator Chief Nicholas Olson, two days before the Fourth of July barbecue. Olson denies any wrongdoing.

The platoon was withdrawn after the Navy made an unusually public push to strengthen order and discipline in its secretive elite force amid a series of scandals involving SEALs. The misconduct has included cocaine use and tampering of drug tests by members of SEAL Team 10 based in Virginia, and last year’s conviction of Navy SEAL Adam Matthews, who was sentenced to one year in military prison for his role in the 2017 hazing-related death of an Army Green Beret in Africa.

The Navy fired three SEAL leaders in the aftermath of the alleged rape on the Iraq air base and charged Special Warfare Operator First Class Adel A. Enayat, an enlisted SEAL, with sexual assault, aggravated assault via strangulation and assault by battery for allegedly biting the victim on the face, according to his charge sheet. He faces a court-martial in November.

A hearing in the case was held Friday at Naval Base San Diego. At the hearing, Jeremiah Sullivan, the lawyer for the SEAL, said he was concerned Enayat, who identifies as “non-white,” cannot get a fair trial because of systemic racism in the military justice system, pointing out that there are no Black judges on the Navy bench.

Andrew Dyer (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE) adds:

Enayat, who has fair skin and reddish-blond hair, is “non-White,” Sullivan said. He declined to specify Enayat’s race or ethnicity when asked by the Union-Tribune after court, citing his client’s privacy.

Enayat arrived to court in civilian clothes and, despite a lingering heat wave, wore a gray hooded sweatshirt upon leaving the courthouse Friday with the hood pulled up. He wore his dress white uniform during the hearing.

Assault in the military continues. Eight years of chatter under Barack Obama didn't change a thing. Policies might have, empty words didn't. Joe Biden was the Vice President for those eight years and now he wants to be president. Molly Nagle (ABC NEWS) reports on Joe's interview with David Muir:

“We saw the president just this week, during the convention, he traveled to Pennsylvania. He traveled to Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, all of that while you were making your case to the American people. I understand the restrictions of COVID and campaigning in this time. But can you win a presidential election from home?” Muir asked Biden during an interview Friday in Wilmington, Delaware.

“We will,” Biden said. “We're gonna follow the science, what the scientists tell us."

Does Joe mean the doctors? What the doctors state? Of the same interview, Miranda Devine (NEW YORK POST) offers:

Then he laughed off a question about his mental fitness.

“Watch me.”

Trouble is, we’ve been trying to watch Biden all year. We don’t ever get to see him unedited or without a teleprompter, without his wife or some helper at his side.

Last night’s interview was done alongside running mate Kamala Harris, ready to mop up if he lost his train of thought.

So low are expectations of Biden that his acceptance speech at the funereal Democratic convention last week was hailed as a miracle, the best speech of his life, perhaps even in the history of the world.

In truth, it was a string of cheap shots and clichés encrusted in saccharine, delivered in a halting, shouty monotone.

Everyone waited with bated breath to see if this elderly man auditioning to be president could manage to read a 24-minute speech from a teleprompter. In degree of difficulty, it’s not exactly a triple pike. But the sense of relief was palpable among Democrats and their media allies.

Hiding and lying appear to be Joe's campaign strategy. REUTERS notes:

Biden was critical of Trump’s travel. “Look what happened with his events. People die, people get together, they don’t wear masks, they end up getting COVID,” he said.

There has been no direct link between a Trump campaign event and an outbreak of the virus, although health officials in Oklahoma said a surge in cases there was likely connected to a Trump rally held at a Tulsa arena in June. Since then, Trump has staged open-air events with small crowds.

Joe can't stop lying and wasn't there a direct link to his campaign urging people to vote in the primary -- despite the pandemic -- and they're getting ill?

Robin Roberts (GOOD MORNING AMERICA) interviewed Joe and Kamala Harris together. This was a troubling moment:

BIDEN: I mean she had the best recommendation she can get: my son Beau, not a joke. Beau asked me when she was U.S. Attorney General, they were attorneys general together taking on the banks, and I got a call and he said, "Dad, I want you to go to California." I said, "OK honey, what for?" He said, "I want you to nominate Kamala Harris for United States Senate." I said OK, without asking. And they were good friends and Beau had great respect for Kamala, knew she was tough. She has a backbone like a ramrod. She's completely thoroughly honest, and so I, you know, I'm not joking. You knew my relationship with Beau. So it was easy for me, it was easy for me.

"Okay, honey"? Okay, honey?
